wordsthatfit: Black Superhero History Month, Day 23: Nat Turner.  Yes, that Nat Turner. Y’see, back in 2006, cartoonist Kyle Baker (author of one of my Top 10 favorite comics ever, Why I Hate Saturn) took it upon himself to adapt The Confessions of Nat Turner into a comic book. Over four impressively illustrated  chapters, we see Nat Turner from youth to revolutionary hero to his demise and it is at once harrowing, disturbing and educational. The first chapter alone is a masterclass of the comics form, as Baker portrays the horrific capture of Africans, the barbaric Middle Passage and the inhuman conditions of captivity without a single line of dialogue. In fact, there is very little on-panel dialogue (word balloons) as the book’s narration is pulled directly from William Styron’s book.
